Standards Based Grading

Okay along with my 30 day reflection videos I do want to use this blog for sharing my ideas and collaborating. I was just telling my students that we live in a "global community" and I started thinking that I could collaborate with great teachers from all over.

I have been researching a lot about standards based grading and I think it is the right thing for my classes. I have been reading books on grading and my eyes have really opened. My grade book used to be filled with all homework assignments and assessments. This doesn't tell anyone what the students actually came away with. I know that I need to change how I have been doing things and I know that it is best for my students.

  1. What does standards based grading mean exactly? How is it different from regular assessment. Glad to see you're blogging again.

  2. Standards based grading..it is time for the change! I have struggled with traditional grading for the last, well, probably 10 years. I have never believed in grading homework as to me, homework was "practice" of new skills, not anything to be assessed just as coming to class prepared or participating in class was not a show of the skills that student had acquired. I like what the Academy has done with grading and wish we could all adopt that same format as that is what makes sense to me; it shows what the student really has learned and accomplished. I am more than ready to make the change over to totally revamping the way grading takes place, and have made some changes with my own students while still having to stick to the traditional format. It time to make grades more meaningful...I hope it happens sooner than later. I love your blog idea and will certainly be checking it!! Good luck!

I am so glad you are researching this! It truly transformed how I taught, but more importantly, how my students understood their learning.

  5. Hey Jeanne! Thanks for checking out the blog. Robert Marzano explains Standards-Based Grading as, "At its core, instead of only an overall grade for an area, it’s also broken down into specific topics that were covered in that subject." It would mean that what I want my students to get out of my class would be more clear and assessed more accurately.

If you want to know more you should check out this good article titled "7 Reasons for Standards-Based Grading".
